Hersonissos, Crete

This lively coastal town in the north of the island will certainly keep you entertained with plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs.

Dance the night away to some big-name DJs, or if you prefer a taste of home there are plenty of Birtish and Irish bars playing live music. As night turns to day, head down to one of Hersonissos' three beaches which offer a wide range of water sports, including jet skiing, banana boats and windsurfing.

One of Crete's biggest water parks, this is a great day out for kids of all ages. Knossos was the mighty palace once ruled over by the Minoan People around 4,000 years ago, and it is believed to be home to the mythical Minotaur. A short trip through the takes you to Aghios Nikolaos Market. Potter around the open-air market and pick up some souveniers, or stroll down to the harbour and relax in one of its waterfront cafes.

If you are looking for more traditional, crafted gifts then nearby Kritsa is the place for you. The mountain village is packed full of handicraft stalls selling embroidered linens, hand-woven rugs and pottery.
